In Canada, unlike admissions into undergraduate schools, gaining admission to graduate schools is normally hard. Citing her situation in which she had been under pressure from a graduate school to decide whether to accept or decline its offer to admit her into it (she had until today to do so), my younger daughter had requested the process of her application to her Canadian dream graduate school be expedited. Last Wednesday, Mr. Justin Trudeau, at 43, was sworn in as Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister. Humility in the forms of folksiness and non-arrogance manifested itself in what he did that day. Mr. Trudeau and his 30 cabinet ministers-designate broke with the tradition of riding limousines to swearing-in ceremonies and together rode a bus, exuding folksiness. This was reminiscent of Mr. Trudeau’s own childhood in which, denying themselves a privilege coming with their status as children of the then incumbent Prime Minister, he and his two younger brothers rode a public transit bus to a public school where they mingled with their respective classmates from poor families as well as affluent ones. Also earlier that day, as for his cabinet ministers, he appointed such an equal number of men and women (15 of each gender and two with disabilities) and so many visible minority MPs (Members of Parliament) and so many rookie MPs as well as veteran MPs that, in the Canadian leading newspaper of the Globe and Mail, a headline read “Trudeau’s cabinet defined by diversity, rookies and women.” Continue reading
