To Kakao Talk my two daughters posted messages to the effect that a video of Kamala Harris’s [U.S. Vice-President-elect] childhood got them emotional. In response, I wrote: “Among the attributes that set Kamala apart from other progressive or radical activists is her deeply-rooted conviction/determination that for the sake of the effectiveness of a reform movement, reform-minded activists should be part of institutions and then implement reform from within. Her such conviction evokes a Korean saying: ‘Catching a tiger entails getting into its den.”’

어머니가 인도계고 아버지가 저메이커계인 미국 부통령 당선자 Kamala Harris의 어린 시절에 관한 비디오를 보고 감동했다는 요지의 메세지를 카카오 톡에 두 딸이 올렸다. 응답으로 나는 다음과 같이 썼다. “Kamala가 다른 진보 혹은 급진 성향 인사들과 다른 점 중에는 효과적인 개혁을 위해서 개혁 운동자들은 제도권으로 들어가서 내부에서 개혁을 실행해야 한다는 그녀에 깊게 뿌리 박힌 확신이다. 그녀의 이런 확고한 신념은 ‘호랑이를 잡으려면 호랑이 굴 속으로 들어가야 한다’는 한국 속담을 연상케 한다.”
